My First Painting
Rembrandt's Portrait of a Lady with an Ostrich Feather Fan The first painting I remember seeing as a child, when I was about 9 or 10 years old, was a Rembrandt portrait at the National Gallery. A sense of doom came over me immediately and I thought, "I will never be that good, is it pointless to even try?" It took me months to get over it. Of course, we had been in Washington to attend a funeral and that probably colored my reaction. Even today, it's hard for me to see Rembrandt with a clear eye. I flip back and forth between thinking he was mortal (I understand the technique) and he is a god (those hands! those eyes!)
